Description
Via International and Peacework are partnering to convene faculty and program leaders for a two-day exploratory immersion in San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

Founded in 1975 and now celebrating 50 years of community-rooted work, Via International is a San Diego based nonprofit that builds cross-border partnerships advancing sustainable development, grassroots leadership, and equitable opportunity.

Peacework is a global nonprofit with more than 30 years of experience designing cross-sector programs that connect academic institutions and communities to advance social justice and collective impact worldwide.

Together, we are assembling a cross-institutional cohort of university leaders from across the United States for a focused, relationship-driven exploration of the U.S.–Mexico border region.

Why Participate?
This curated immersion is designed for academics seeking deeper professional understanding of the border region while building meaningful institutional relationships.

Through structured dialogue and direct interaction with community leaders, participants examine the forces shaping migration, inequality, environmental stewardship, and binational collaboration. From philanthropists and promotoras to social entrepreneurs, migrant advocates, environmental leaders, and policy practitioners, participants gain direct access to the region’s dynamic network of grassroots organizations and cross-border partners.

The program is particularly relevant for faculty and administrators exploring future institutional engagement in:

  • Migration and Human Rights

  • Social Justice and Ethics

  • Chicano/Latinx Studies and Activism

  • Civic Engagement and Youth Empowerment

  • Art and Cultural Heritage

  • Creative Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation

  • Public Policy and Social Impact

  • Trust-Based Community Development

More than just a site visit, this immersion is structured to support partnership development, collaborative program design, and sustained institutional collaboration in one of the most complex and consequential regions in North America.
