Connecting Across Borders

Border Immersion Travel creates transformative educational experiences that connect people, purpose, and place across the U.S.–Mexico border. Our programs bring participants face-to-face with community leaders, grassroots organizations, activists, artists, and newly arrived migrants to experience the realities, resilience, and opportunities that define one of the world's most dynamic border regions.

Rather than observing the border from a distance, participants engage directly with the people who live and work within it every day. Through authentic conversations, community visits, and shared experiences, they gain a deeper understanding of migration, social justice, community development, and the interconnected lives of people on both sides of the border.

Via International partners with trusted organizations throughout San Diego and Tijuana to design meaningful border immersion experiences tailored to schools, universities, faith communities, nonprofits, and professional groups. Whether exploring community-led initiatives in San Diego, learning from grassroots organizations in Tijuana, or crossing between both cities to understand the border as one shared region, every program is rooted in ethical engagement, mutual respect, and long-standing community partnerships.

Every Border Immersion journey is built around listening to real stories, learning from local leaders, and experiencing the day-to-day life of communities on both sides of the border. Participants leave with a broader global perspective, meaningful relationships, and a deeper appreciation for the people working every day to build stronger, more connected communities across borders.

Stonehill College

"Our first experience working with Via International was exemplary. The communication with the organizers was thorough and timely. All aspects of the trip were carefully considered and taken care of with great respect to our group needs and the needs of the receiving community. Our students walked away with a heightened commitment to learning about indigenous peoples, immigration, and migration into the United States and a desire to educate their peers, friends, and families regarding the information they learned. We are definitely partnering with Via again and are grateful for such an educational, fun and life-changing experience."
